
Chief Deputy John Cummings began his law enforcement career in 1984 as a patrol officer for the Claremore Police Department. While at the Claremore PD he rose through the ranks to Sergeant, Narcotics Enforcement, Investigator, and Chief Investigator. Cummings has over 1500 hours of CLEET training and also holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate for the State of Oklahoma. Most of his time at the Claremore Police Department was spent as an Investigator in various fields, gaining valuable education, training and experience. In 2000 Cummings was appointed Assistant Chief of Police, managing all aspects of both law enforcement and civilian employees. Cummings retired in 2006 with over 22+ years of service to the citizens of Claremore. During his time at the Claremore Police Department Cummings achieved both a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree of Science in Management (MSM).
In 2007 Cummings was hired as a Special Ranger with the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, stationed in Oklahoma and commissioned by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate agriculture related crimes statewide. In 2012 Cummings was promoted to Supervisor of Region 3, consisting of all Oklahoma based Special Rangers. Cummings retired from Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association in 2021. Widowed in 2020, Cummings spent time with his family after his retirement.
In January 2025 he came aboard with newly elected Sheriff Bart Perrier in a part-time investigation role to assist in organizing evidence and working cold cases. In June 2025, Cummings was brought on as a full-time Chief Deputy with priority of supervising the investigations unit, evidence and civilian employees of the Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Cummings brings 39+ years of extensive education and experience as an officer, investigator and administrator to our organization. He will be involved in all aspects of the operations of the Sheriff’s Office, utilizing his knowledge and experience to augment and improve the Osage County Sheriff’s Office to better serve all citizens of Osage County.
